Where to stay in Capri
A small island that empties in the evening. Day trippers see the port and the Blue Grotto; staying the night buys you Anacapri, the cliff walks and a very different place after the last ferry.
Everyone arrives by sea at Marina Grande, on boats from Naples and Sorrento all year and from Positano and Amalfi in season. A room at the harbour buys early boats and little else. The funicular climbs to Capri town: the Piazzetta, the shops, and the walk along Via Tragara to the Faraglioni. Anacapri is higher and quieter, a small bus up a cliff road away, with the Monte Solaro chairlift.
It suits walkers and swimmers who do not need sand. It suits the impatient less: the buses are tiny and queued for in summer, the Blue Grotto shuts whenever the swell rises, and everything runs on steps. The last boats to Sorrento and Naples leave in the early evening, earlier out of season; build the return into the plan.
Two nights make the island; one is the day trip stretched. See the Blue Grotto before the day boats arrive, then walk once the ferries are in: the crowd stays near the Piazzetta and the path to Villa Jovis is quiet by noon. Pair it with Sorrento or Naples, whose boats run all year, rather than the coast.
